Creatures: The Albian Years on Steam - Product information

At the risk of large numbers of Creatures fans mobbing me at my bus, I have to say that I didn't like this game at all. I was a minor Creatures 1 fan, and I rushed out and bought Creatures 2 the first day it was available.

Yes, I risked looking like a dork among dorks in the computer store's kiddie section obviously the game was mislabeled , but I got it anyway.

What a mistake. The first thing I noticed wrong was that it was hard. You might think, "Well, great! I can't wait to try it! And, unless you're an animal trainer, don't expect to be able to get your Creatures to be able to talk, to come to you, or even to marginally like you. Second problem: ugly Creatures. The last game, they were cute.

Now, they look like little monsters from a B-rated movie. Third and final problem: just not the way you'd want to spend your Saturday. It's not as hard as people say. They're all close minded. It's not as hard as people make it out to be. And the norns really are sweet things, I'll admit they aren't as cute and cuddly as the first Creatures adventure, but they are cute.

I think that people just need to relax and try to understand the meaning of this game, which is really easy to do, I really like it. People just need to have an open opinion on some of these things. If you want my advice, this is a really interesting game, it makes you think, there are gene splicers to create your own norns, and ettins, and all types of neat adventures ready for you as you explore a computer world complete within itself, and virtualy perfect except for the Grendels.

This Truly is a great game, a work of 3D art, but if your not ready to give these creatures your full dedication and time, then this isn't the game for you, although it is fun. Have fun and play great, I hope kids of all ages can appreciate this wonderful game, but I don't recomend this game for anyone under 10 It WILL be to hard for them! Now it's the best game I have ever played. I bought this game when it first came out..

I was in middle school at the time and I confess, I was extremely disappointed at first My norns kept dying. Probably five plus years later I picked it up again and I fell in love with it. I realized how complicated and vast the eco system was, how complicated it was to care for the norns, what a great challenge it presented. If you are a science head and find sims to be a little bit mundane at times, you gotta play this game.

If you don't like it at first it will grow on you. Trust me, like the description said, this game is very underrated! To discuss topics such as news, pricing, or community, use our forums. When Norns mate, there is a long kissing sound with a pop at the end — known as a kisspop. Like real life, not all mating results in a pregnancy. The Norn reproductive process can be monitored via the Breeder's Kit. At the beginning, the player is only able to navigate a small area of Albia.

As their Norns explore the world, however, more areas will be able to be visited. If a Norn falls into water and is picked up, it cannot be placed in an unvisited area. Like the previous game, every plant, animal and insect in Albia is a separate system called an autonomous agent, or just "agent" for short. Many user-created agents have been made, which can be injected into the world using the Injector Kit applet, which also includes an analysis page giving the opportunity to check new objects for potentially harmful contents before injecting them.

Albia, the world in which Creatures 2 is set, is a vast disc-world filled with a wide variety of flora, ranging from the Cacti that inhabit the desert to the exclusive mushroom-like Gelsemium plant that can only be found in a single cavern.

Albia is also home to a substantial amount of animal life, such as bees which pollinate flowers and create honey , and Zander fish, which provide a food source for creatures near the oceans. Scattered throughout the world are various seed launchers, which can be used to replenish stocks if any life-forms become extinct. Unfortunately, the Creatures 2 launch did not go as planned. The Early Adoption Program failed to deliver on its basic promise of being "early", and the game had several major flaws, the most notable of which was a deficient norn genome that lead to OHSS.

Cyberlife was subsequently accused of gouging customers when they released a Life Kit with an improved genome as well as other features but neglected to release this as a patch to the original game until several weeks had passed.

This could be a result of tighter deadlines for the manual rather than than the book considering Mindscape's requirements for translation, packaging and distribution or publisher-related editing of the manual for simplicity.

Overall, Creatures 2 was probably a commercial success despite inadequate marketing, which affected subsequent games as well - however, it could be seen as a strategic failure, as for many it compromised the trust between the community and Cyberlife. Much had been promised, and yet many users considered the only improvement over the original to be the graphics. Third-party developers were naturally less willing to work on a game that they did not really enjoy playing, and this probably affected the supply of COBs.

Things improved after the development of the Canny Norns and Nova Subterra , but some people had lost interest by then, and it is impossible to say how many people would have become part of the community but never found out about the improved genomes and so grew prematurely tired of the game. Your first hour or two in the game will be spent getting your noms to a point where they can just about look after themselves. In later stages though, you'll have the opportunity to mess about with the Genetic Splicing Machine which enables you to create your own creatures.

Mix the genes from the loveable noms with the evil grendels, add a couple of genes from anything else you find lying around, and there's a distinct possibility you could end up 'inventing' your very own living, breathing nightmare. Perhaps the most emphatic proof of the appeal of this type of game is the phenomenal following Creatures has on the Internet.

Since its release, over dedicated sites have appeared. On these you can find and download thousands of new creatures, plants, animals, toys and tools. The newsgroup alt. Only in America. Anyway, Creatures 2 is here and I'm terrified. Because I can't help loving my creations.

Whether they're thick or clever, independent or docile, or even annoying, I care for them. I'm normally a bloke who likes beer and fags and farting, so what the blazes is going on?! The noms are taking over my life. Is that a risk you're prepared to take? First of all, I wish to dedicate this review to Abe Vigoda. Not the venerable actor from the hit sitcom "Barney Miller," but my first Norn. May she rest in peace. Let me premise this with how inadequate I am at nurturing the concept of "artificial life.

No matter how long I would try to get those little cell colonies to multiply, I was always left with a blank screen and usually a lot of runtime errors. I graduated up to the concept of SimCity many years later, but often found myself laughing maniacally as disaster after disaster doomed my sim-citizens.

Any game that required me to tend to the outcome of others left me downtrodden and with many deaths in my wake. That is, until Kentucky Fried Chicken saved me. These are not unlike the Tamagotchi from Bandai. I thought. I finally found something that I could nurture… and it only had three buttons.

This little hand-held wonder thrived under my constant tutelage. I could do it! I finally was the artificial father I always wanted to be!
